Japan's Extreme Weather

Japan's most recent bought of extreme weather came over the summer during disastrous rainfall. As the country was still recovering from late June's Typhoon Prapiroon, the atmosphere was too. That, combined with a warm front forming from the Pacific Ocean fed torrential storms across the country for a majority of July. This extreme weather created one of the country's most deadly summers resulting in record-breaking heatwaves (Record 106ª F with 80 deaths from that alone) flooding, landslides, and 176 deaths. Japanese weather disaster experts claim that the country is experiencing significantly more extreme weather events as global warming rises. Because of the country's almost constant-feeling amount of earthquakes, the government tends to allocate funds toward building codes and reinforcing buildings to withstand quakes but not necessarily the increased flooding.

Record-Breaking Temperatures compared to cities' previous records, all recorded July 23

Though we will get into the topic more next week, Typhoon season in Japan is another extreme event growing in paralell numbers to global warming. Typhoon Jebi in August was Japan's worst disaster in 25 years. Only a month later, Japan was hit with another Category 5 Typhoon Tremi

  1. Hi, Madeleine! Great blog posting this week. I did not know it gets close to 100 degrees in Japan. I agree on how Japan dedicates its money on earthquakes, but I feel they should dedicate a good portion to preventing floods as well. Keep up the great work.

  2. When I was younger I always had the assumption that Japan was a colder country. As I grew up and learned more about the country I learned how totally untrue that is, Japan gets hit with some pretty bad summers. It also tends to have some of the worst typhoons and earthquakes.. A very interesting country to study for weather conditions. I am sad to see how so many countries are being hurt by global warming and how little is being done about it. But I do believe that Japan actually tries to take care of their environment in some parts of their major cities.
